The CDL examination is administered by SFSC as part of the program. The four-week course meets Monday-Friday at the Crews Center in Avon Park and provides 160 contact hours of training regarding:

Department of Transportation (DOT) rules and regulations, safety, logs, and other legal issues that apply to trucking and transportation.

Vehicle systems, safe vehicle operation, and hazardous materials

Personal finances, business math, and public and employer relations

Extensive hands-on experience with emergency equipment, safety operations, and preventive maintenance.

This four-week course provides extensive and quality truck driving instruction to help you be the most successful driver on the road. SFSC offers the in-depth, hands-on truck driving experience sought by employers. SFSC also provides job placement assistance. Prior to beginning the training, a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) from the DMV is required. Cost includes tuition and two attempts at the CDL Class A exam.

SFSC is a State of Florida-approved testing facility for the Commercial Drivers License (CDL) skills test, consisting of three parts: the state-mandated, pre-trip inspection, covering 170 parts of the vehicle that must be checked; the basic controls skills test; and the road course. Applicants who pass all three parts receive a Class A, B or C CDL. Participants may use their own vehicles or an SFSC vehicle. The refresher course is offered to prepare students for the exam. The refresher training is for experienced drivers only whose CDL has lapsed or who wish to upgrade their CDL. The refresher training is offered in eight-hour increments starting at $600. The exam fee is $400. Prior to beginning the training and exam, a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) from the DMV is required. Scholarships are available for those who qualify for the training.
