Acquire the skills to operate professional trucks and tractor trailers through a curriculum based on classroom, range skills and over-the-road instruction. Potential job opportunities may be available upon completion of both Class A and Class B CDL training. Funding and paid training may be available to students who qualify and enroll in a CDL training program.

Instruction is provided by professional instructors with a number of years’ experience in the trucking industry.

Class A & Class B CDL Training and CDL Learner’s Prep Course are held at Mountain Top Truck Driving Institute in Grantsville

This skills-oriented program offers a professional truck driving curriculum for students to obtain entry-level positions as drivers in over-the-road or local driving vehicles in today’s trucking industry.

Program Goals

Topics covered include: classroom, range skills and over-the-road instruction to acquire fundamentals for operating trucks and tractor trailers for those that require a Class A license.

The training will also cover pre-trip inspection, various skills in the yard, and over-the-road instruction along with a basic overview of map reading and log books.

Upon completion of the training, participants will be able to take the driving test at their local Department of Motor Vehicles to obtain a Class A license.

Program Requirements

No prior education or experience with trucks is required to enroll in the CDL program at Garrett College.

However, all students must meet the driver qualifications set forth by the Bureau of Motor Carrier Safety and pass the physical examination requirements established by the Department of Transportation, as outlined below:

- High school diploma (transcript), GED®, or passing score on his/her ASSET test.

- Must currently possess a valid license and be 18 years of age.

- Must communicate in the English language sufficiently, as required by the U. S. Department of Transportation

- Department of Transportation (DOT) Physical which cannot expire during the training period and a DOT Federal Drug Screen less than 60 days old

- Class A, Commercial Driver’s License permit - which must be valid during the length of the training period with the following endorsements: general knowledge, combination and air brakes

Time to Complete Program

- 30 days (210 hours of instruction)

- Training is available during the weekday or weekend

- Weekday training is offered in a 7.5 week timeframe, Monday – Thursday, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.

- Evening option is scheduled for 10 weeks, Monday-Thursday, 5 p.m.-10:30 p.m.

- Weekend training is scheduled for 15 weeks and includes Saturdays and Sundays, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Class A Training is broken down into the following 3 courses:

- Customized Training for Commercial Driver's License I (28 hours - 4 days), classroom

- Customized Training for Commercial Driver's License II (98 hours - 14 days), range skills and over-the-road

- Customized Training for Commercial Driver's License III (84 hours - 12 days), range skills and over-the-road

Garrett College is an affordable, public two-year community college, located in scenic western Maryland near Deep Creek Lake, a four-season resort destination.
