Truck Driving

Drive trucks with a capacity of more than three tons to transport and deliver cargo. People on this career pathway have to be able to maintain truck logs according to state and federal regulations.

Students in Heavy Truck Driving are trained in the following subject areas:

Checking vehicles to ensure that mechanical, safety and emergency equipment is in good working order

Maneuvering trucks into loading or unloading positions, following signals from loading crew, and checking that vehicle and loading equipment are properly positioned

Collecting delivery instructions from appropriate sources, verifying instructions and routes

CAREER OPTIONS

Most Heavy Truck Driving Job Corps graduates work full-time for a trucking company.

REQUIREMENTS

Before entering the program, students must:

Good hearing, 20/40 vision or better (may not be colorblind), and normal use of arms and legs.

Not allowed for interstate truck drivers: epilepsy, diabetes controlled by insulin, or the use of any controlled substances not prescribed by a licensed physician

No felony convictions involving the use of a motor vehicle, a crime involving drugs, driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, refusing to submit to an alcohol test required by a state

A driver must not have left the scene of a crime or caused a fatality through negligent operation of a motor vehicle

Be at least 18 or 21 years old. (varies by state)

Complete the core curriculum with passing scores on all written and performance tests.

Meet basic academic requirements in math and reading.

Have a high school diploma or equivalent.

Have a valid driver’s license or no barriers to receiving a license while enrolled.

Have a clean driving record.

CREDENTIALS

As a Job Corps student, you will have the opportunity to earn credentials in your training area that may lead to greater employment opportunities, higher wages, and promotions.

Students who complete a program in the Transportation training area can earn nationally recognized credentials and/or state licensure. Credentials such as these show that students have the skills and knowledge to work in transportation, logistics, and customer service.
