CDL Training Programs Ready to Meet the Demands of the Transportation Industry
Our CDL programs include classroom instruction to prepare you for the permit test at the DMV and teach you fundamental industry knowledge including securing a load, filling out log books, understanding CSA, and map reading.
The practical hands-on portion of your program gets you behind the wheel performing air brake leakage tests, maneuvers, pre-trip inspections, and navigating public roads.
Your final test with the Connecticut DMV will be at your location, in Seymour or Meriden, on the same trucks you have been training on so that you can confidently test and begin your new career in the trucking industry. Job Placement Assistance is available to current students and graduates of Allstate’s training programs and our Employer Events including biannual Career Fairs are open to the public.
Manual vs. Automatic Transmissions
Regulations require your CDL to have an “automatic restriction” if you take your final DMV skills test on a commercial vehicle with an automatic transmission. This means you are only allowed to drive automatic trucks in your class of license. Removing this restriction would require an additional DMV skills test on a manual CDL Class A or CDL Class B vehicle which can be done at any time.
Automatics have gained tremendous ground in the transportation industry over the last decade. Newer model CDL Class B trucks and CDL Class A tractor-trailers are predominately automatic. Due to carrier demand, most major truck manufacturers have scaled back production on manual transmissions and the industry is seeing them increasingly phased out.
This means that if you drive for a company with a modern fleet you will most likely be driving an automatic vehicle. Having said this, manual transmissions, while becoming less common are not extinct. Smaller local companies may prefer manual transmission or may run older equipment looking to maximize their equipment investment. CDL Class A tractors are made to go millions of miles and these vehicles will be in the industry for decades to come.
